In this first part, after her mother's death from tuberculosis, 12 year old Coco and her younger sister Julia are abandoned by their father at a convent. Coco leaves the sisters when she turns 18 to live with her two Aunts, Louise and Adrienne. She works as a seamstress, but dreams of a better life . . . This 1981 romantic biography of Coco Chanel is one of my favorite Timothy Dalton movies. Tim plays Boy Capel, Coco's one true love, a rich, self-made man who undoubtly returned her love and was very good to her, but he was never completely faithful. Tim, as usual, makes his character very appealing in spite of his flaws and you fall in love with him right along with Coco. Marie-France Pisier is stunning as Coco Chanel and Rutger Hauer, in his first English-speaking role, is wonderful as Boy Capel's close friend and Coco's first love, Etienne de Balsan. With Etienne de Balsan and Boy Capel's help, Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel rose from obscurity to the top of the fashion world. Wikipedia says: "Her extraordinary influence on fashion was such that she was the only person in the couturier field to be named on Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century."
