It's Only a Paper Moon
It's Only a Paper Moon was written in 1933 by Harold Arlen and EY Harburg for a Broadway play that didn't do very well. However, it was used that same year in the movie Take a Chance in which I believe Cliff Edwards (aka Ukulele Ike, aka Jiminy Cricket) sang it. During the heydays of the Cotton Club in Harlem, Arlen co-wrote a number of hits with his then writing partner, Ted Koehler. Let's Fall in Love and Stormy Weather were a couple of standouts. Along with Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen is one of my favorite song writers from that long ago time. Among others, he and Mercer co-wrote Blues in the Night, That Old Black Magic and One for My Baby. However, I guess the song Harold Arlen is most known for is that sentimental favorite, Over the Rainbow, also co-written with Harburg for the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. It won the Academy Award that year. I'm playing my baritone uke on this one (sorry, Guy) and trying to play a little bit of lead on a backing track (again, sorry, Guy).
