Dennis Potter's 'Pennies From Heaven' - 'Down Sunnyside Lane'

'Pennies From Heaven' by Dennis Potter. Episode 1: 'Down Sunnyside Lane'. In their Metro-land dream semi, the sexual tensions in the battle of the bedroom are revealed, as music salesman Arthur (Bob Hoskins), frustrated by his frigid wife Joan (Gemma Craven), lives through his songs in their escape and promise of love. But as Arthur, looking desperately for romance and a life affirming immortality to reach the fantasy world of his songs, reflects ironically on the easy promise of the song's lyrics, there's already a hint of rain in Sunnyside Lane. The title-song of the first play is heard at the beginning and here at the end of the episode as Potter juxtaposes the superficial bliss of living in the new 1930s Metro-land with the frustrations and sexual tensions lurking behind the curtains of suburbia. A dark studio set creates an atmospheric scene with Hoskins first lip-syncing with Potter's trademark use of dubbed music until, unable to control the frustration and anger welling up inside of him, the lip-syncing is abandoned while the music plays on as Hoskins character is left eventually with only the ticking of the clock for company for dramatic effect.
