Dennis Potter's 'Pennies From Heaven' - 'Yes Yes (My Baby Said 'Yes')'
'Pennies From Heaven' by Dennis Potter. Episode 2: 'The Sweetest Thing'. Arthur (Bob Hoskins) is at breakfast with three other 'commercial gentlemen', Ted (Roger Sloman), Bert (Roy Holder) and Alf (Bill Dean). They are in the middle of a familiar dismal litany on the woefulness of England. Very uncharacteristically Arthur is pre-occupied, not joining in. Goaded, the others force him to say what's deliriously on his mind. He's met Eileen again and she's all he imagined. Not only that she actually likes him as well! A flood of strong studio lighting signals the start of the musical number as Hoskins comes under the spotlight and breaks into Sam Browne's dubbed vocals. The 'chorus' breaks into close harmony singing, with cheeky dance gestures of the time. The number fades, normal studio lighting returns and Hoskins is brought back down to earth with snide comments in strong language from his companions bursting his dream bubble. Music: 'Yes Yes ('My Baby Said 'Yes')'. Bert Ambrose and His Orchestra at the Mayfair Hotel, London. (Vocal: Sam Browne and The Carlyle Cousins). Recorded 1931. Dennis Potter's award-winning 'Pennies From Heaven' (BBC 1978). Directed by Piers Haggard, produced by long-time Potter collaborator Kenith Trodd, with choreography and design by Tudor Davies and Tim Harvey. One of the finest pieces of television the BBC has ever produced.
