William Rhys Meek: ' Demoiselles ' from 'A Fenland Journey'
This piece comes from the 2003 album 'A Fenland Journey' by William Rhys Meek (1963- ). The composer is also a naturalist and ecologist and a native of the Fenlands of eastern England (where some of my own ancestors lived for generations). The 'Demoiselles' of the title are actually large damselflies (similar to dragonflies but thinner, and able to fold their wings on their backs). The piece starts almost like a children's piece but soon begins to meander melodically and harmonically, and the striking ending is almost reminiscent of Mompou.
