For those unfamiliar with the travesty that is the Doris Holt story, we will attempt to summarize the ordeal that has been ongoing for nearly two years. In July of 2009, an elderly Doris Holt was taken into custody and made a ward of the State of South Carolina. Subsequently, without notification or conceivable justification the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) terminated Ms. Holt's uncapped and comprehensive private medical insurance coverage. This unfortunate action by DSS resulted in a swift decline in the quality of care and eventually led to her current critical health condition. In short, this is a story of incredulous elder abuse at the hands of South Carolina's Department of Social Services. Doris Holt's son James Spencer, Ms. Holt's personally appointed durable power of attorney and health care power of attorney is fighting to save his mother's life by moving her to a local doctor and facility which SC DSS will not allow. Mr. Spencer, undaunted is building a case for the abuse of Doris Holt by SC DSS personnel and Unihealth personnel. In that regard, he engaged a medical expert (See affidavit below) whose report raises grave concerns about the State of South Carolina's Department of Social Services and their priorities and our system of health care in general, both of which need to be addressed.
