Yes, Streep is always great, but her Julia Child simulation is something to behold. With her idiosyncratic speech patterns and unmistakable tone, Child has always been ripe for caricature, but that's not what happens here: it doesn't take long for Streep to fully inhabit the famous chef, allowing for a great story to take hold. Streep and Ephron take Child through her struggles to prove herself in the kitchen and write that cookbook, and she becomes not just a voice and an imposing image, but a real and interesting person. The recipe's base is Powell's book, in which working stiff Powell (A really Amazing performance by Amy Adams) finds meaning in a self-imposed challenge: prepare all 524 courses in one year from "Mastering the Art of French Cooking," the paradigm-shifting 1961 cookbook Child (the ever-extraordinary Meryl Streep) wrote with Simone Beck (Linda Emond) and Louisette Bertholle (Helen Carey).
