Curt Flood is responsible for the millions that baseball players now earn the right to receive. At the time of his court case, which freed players to change teams under free agency rules, a healthy 23% of Major League Baseball players were United States born African Americans. Since then, those numbers have dwindled to less than 9%. What happened? Where are the new Willie Mays, Hank Aarons, Bob Gibsons and Maury Willses? Why, after shattering the Negro Leagues by poaching all the best players and freezing Negro leagues teams from the municipal stadiums, are there now fewer and fewer African Americans making their way onto MLB rosters? Perhaps it is true that African Americans find the NBA and NFL fairer toward Blacks as players and in management opportunities.
