Don Ellis - A Cube of Sugar (1967)
Music clips culled from the season 1 episode "A Cube of Sugar" (1967) of "Mission: Impossible" in which IMF agent Rollin Hand (actor Martin Landau) is sent behind the iron curtain to pose as a beatnik artist to free junky jazz musician and agent Vincent Deane from his padded cell of the People's police precinct and to get back a secret microchip from a cube of drug-laced sugar. Meanwhile IMF leader Dan Briggs (actor Steven Hill) pays an official visit to Deane and IMF agent Cinnamon Carter (actress Barbara Bain), posing as Deane's wife, manipulates the police head Senko Brobin (actor Francis Lederer). Composer Don Ellis writes a dissonant free jazz-oriented score that foreshadows some parts of "The French Connection" (1971): notice the trumpet played with echo and distortions. Ellis also rearranges the martial theme of the series in a low-key and distant way.
