Conan the Barbarian 3D Review - Part 1 of 3 - Highlander Reviews

This video had to be edited down from thirty minutes, so here's my more specific summary: I have a feeling that this film might have been fighting a losing battle from the beginning. It has received terribly unfair criticism from both Howard and Milius fanboys, the former of whom would be unhappy with anything but a direct adaptation, and the latter of whom would be unhappy with anyone but Arnie in the lead role. Put it this way, if someone tells you that this reboot is worse than Conan the Destroyer or on par with Kull the Conqueror, Red Sonja or even The Scorpion King, then they clearly have an agenda, because it really is so untrue. Characterization is almost non-existent and there are some dodgy special effects, but the action is brutal, viscreal and engaging. This isn't the perfect Conan film, but Momoa plays the role so well, the action is so well executed, and the film as a whole is so damn enjoyable that it definitely deserves to at least serve as the basis of a new series of movies. As a Robert E Howard fan I really feel that this movie does his creation proud. It isn't to his work what Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy is to those books, but it comes so close to the mark that I can taste it. The story may lack the deeper themes that Howard employed, but this is undoubtedly Howard's Conan in action, and for me it was two hours of sheer entertainment.
