Mr. James hires an efficiency expert to seek out the least productive employee so he can fire them. The staff all know it's going to be Matthew and try desperately to save his job. Bill: You've been fired. Matthew: Are you trying to say that I'm fired? Bill: Yes. This is a clear reference to the "One Last Mission" sketch that Phil did on Saturday Night Live, where Jon Lovitz keeps telling him that he's fired. Lauren Graham from the canceled WB hit Gilmore Girls, makes the first of four guest appearances in this episode. The writers and actors wanted to make her a permanent character but the NBC executives did not, ironically she just signed a multi-million dollar deal with NBC and it's new owner to star in a new show in which she will be the main character. I assume this show is Parenthood. Not that anyone cares, but poor Carl is played by actor Michael Kostroff.
