The movie, which opened in US theaters on October 8, 2010 on a limited basis, is an adaptation of the 2006 novel ''It's Kind of a Funny Story'' by Ned Vizzini. In the film, Gilchrist stars as 16-year-old Craig Gilner. When Craig realizes his battle with depression is getting the best of him, he checks himself in to a Brooklyn psychiatric hospital.
