John Mahoney Sunflower Stalk Fm Flute - Haebaragi
Today I recorded in a large farm access tunnel that I've visited a number of times before but never made videos in. This is underneath a highway and has a rather high ceiling, so the sound is quite reverberant. There is no actual through-road here, so there isn't any traffic. The only drawbacks are that, being large in diameter, there can be a lot of wind blowing through at times, and of course there is traffic noise from the vehicles passing overhead. I was happy to put up with these shortcomings due to the special occasion: the debut of the newest addition to my flute family. This unusual-looking flute was skillfully crafted by the deft hands of one Mr. John Mahoney from Ontario, Canada. What's particularly interesting about my new instrument is that it is made of a sunflower stalk (!) It has a subdued, mellow voice that contrasts wonderfully with the other flutes I brought with me today. Check it out! In case you were wondering, "haebaragi" is the Korean word for sunflower.
