Nellie is 33 -years-old, a Friesian-Jersey cross, and lives on a small property at Montumana in Tasmania's far north-west. "She leads a very quiet, peaceful life here. She has three or four acres to play about in and she just eats grass and sits under the trees and sleeps," said current owner John Clements. John feeds her, and she loves a good scratch under her chin. "Occasionally there's another herd of cows come in the paddock next door, and she'll wander up and have a look and wander back and sit down." Nellie was born on a dairy farm at South Forest, sold as a calf, and became a house cow when she was about two-years-old. The first time her life was saved was in the Smithton saleyards. "I was a livestock buyer for the local abattoirs," said Crighton Horton. "I was buying cows to be killed. This cow lined up but Julie [the owner] was leaning on the fence crying her eyes out. "I felt sorry for her so I pulled the cow out of the system and took her home." Nellie produced a number of calves for Crighton, but in the year she didn't he took her to the abattoir.
