zuguide.com In 16th-century Venice, the love-struck Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes) asks his friend, Antonio (Jeremy Irons), for 3000 ducats so that he can marry the fair Portia of Belmont(Lynn Collins). Antonio agrees, though he must borrow the money from Shylock (Al Pacino), a Jewish merchant. In a time of brutal anti-Semitism, the calculating Shylock demands a pound of flesh from Antonio if he cannot repay his debt.
