Based on Charles Willeford' s pulp novel of the same name Alec Baldwin plays a sociopath fresh out of the can who arrives in Miami and hooks up with a not so bright hooker with a heart of gold Jennifer Jason Leigh. The writer director George Armitage keeps the audience guessing as to whose story it is Baldwin and Jason Leigh's love story or the detective on his case Fred Ward and his partners the late great Charles Napier and Nora Dunn investigation. It's clearly both and the pulp novel genre conventions along with great casting keep the film ticking over right from the Norman Greenbaum "Spirit in the Sky" get go. Watch the movie for a last gasp finger chopping scene with Baldwin and Honeymoon Killer's Shirley Stoler! Casting could have killed this film but Armitage, exec prod Jonathan Demme and Howard Feur make great decisions. I like that the story gets moving fast that by 7 minutes in all the main characters have been introduced.
