Originally written as a poem by a Canadian schoolteacher, George Washington Johnson, for one of his pupils, Margaret "Maggie" Clark. They fell in love, but she became ill. During this time, he walked to a hill overlooking a mill and wrote this poem. It was first published in 1864. They were married that same year, but sadly, she passed away the following year.
