When he's not working in the US, he lives a few blocks from his childhood home in Montreal. He's a "bonafide patriot," committed to balancing roles in big-budget films (She's Out Of My League, Tropic Thunder, Knocked Up) with independent Canadian pictures. His latest is The Trotsky, by writer/director Jacob Tierney. Baruchel plays Leon Bronstein, a Montreal West high school senior who thinks he's the second coming of Leon Trotsky, modeling his life--down to the older woman and the death by ice pick--after the Red Army icon. He starts with trying to unionize his dad's (Saul Rubinek) company, then, after being banished to public school, he takes on the board establishment. Baruchel is as passionate as the quirky character he plays, chatting about committing himself to Canadian cinema at the tender age of 12 and wacky American politics.
