In the film, Shailene's character is forced to re-connect with her father and younger sister after her mother is hospitalized in a boating accident. As George's character tries to keep it together for his family and friends, he learns a terrible secret that his wife has been hiding from him. Of course, Shailene's character has been privy to the secret the whole time, and once her father knows, everything changes.
