Bob Hope was a big fan of the NFL and we wrote several specials duriung the 70s and 80s honoring the league. The centerpiece was a two-hour special honoring the league's 60th birthday in 1981. This special guest-starring Don Rickles, Howie Long, Diahann Carroll, Tony Eason, Susan Aiken and others honored Super Bowl XX in 1986. The show aired on the eve of the kickoff. Hope bet on games every weekend and never seemed to be happy with his returns. When we were taping, we'd usually have a game on in the green-room, and he'd stick his head in every so often, check the score, shake his head in disgust, and go back to his dressing room. We often referred to his losing ways in our submissions. During a soft-shoe with George Burns, George handed Hope some sand to sprinkle on the floor and said, "Here's some sand. Make a few bucks." Hope replied, "I need it. I bet on the Rams." When he was in his late seventies, Hope was asked by an interviewer what his greatest regret in life was. Without the slightest pause, he said, "I could have bought the Rams." He wanted to own a team after he became close friends with the owner of the San Diego Chargers, billionaire contractor, Alex Spanos. The two were so close, in fact, one year for Christmas, Alex gave Hope his airplane. It was a Hawker-Siddely that Hope had borrowed so many times, Alex decided to upgrade to a Learjet. But Hope didn't keep his new wings very long after he realized that, not only did he have to hangar it between flights ...
