Home Safe Hamilton - Documentary Excerpt
Hamilton, Ontario was once the centre of Canada's industrial heartland. Like many other cities and towns across North America, it is now grappling with the effects of de-industrialization, including increased rates of poverty and homelessness. "Home Safe Hamilton" is part of a series of documentaries produced by SkyWorks Charitable Foundation that examines why more and more families with children in Canada are struggling to maintain adequate shelter and to put food on the table. In this film, we meet laid-off steelworkers who are in danger of losing their homes, high school students living with poverty and insecure housing, newcomer families who are being exploited by unscrupulous landlords, and aboriginal families who are grappling with housing issues both in the city and on the nearby Six Nations reserve. We also see the positive efforts of families and community members to provide services to support families in need, and to build strong and healthy communities. "Home Safe Hamilton" is directed by award-winning filmmakers Laura Sky and David Adkin. This excerpt from the introduction to the film introduces some of the issues and people we will meet in the documentary.
