Black Horse Stomp, written by Joe Tarto Columbia Vivatonal #617 Played by Markel and his Orchestra Recorded in New York, Feb. 8, 1926 according to Rust, or Feb 23, 1926, according to the online 78 discography. Famous 20's tuba player Joe Tarto wrote this great jazz stomp in 1926 while arranging 3/4 time dance medleys for Fletcher Henderson's orchestra to play at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. Fletcher loved the stomp and recorded it immediately, also playing it at the Roseland. It can be assumed that this stomp gave Fletcher inspiration for his own following compositions, including the "Variety Stomp", which he wrote the following year in 1927. So the "Black Horse stomp" started it all! Best known as member of the Red Nichols Five Pennies, Joe Tarto got his start with a successful 1920 auditon with ukelele strumming Cliff Edwards, to play in his touring vaudeville group. Soon he was playing in Sam Lanins orchestra, and made many records with jazz greats such as Red Nichols Five Pennies, with Bix on the famous Harmony Broadway Bell Hops sides, and more! In the mid twenties he was in the Paul Specht band and in the late twenties (28-30) with Roger Wolfe Kahn's orchestra. He even played the famous Kit kat club with the Vincent Lopez orchestra on a tour in England! Joe played extensively on the radio in its early days and in the early 30s with Freddie Rich, recording also on Hit of the Weeks.
