R-Candy tests
Sugar propellant using potassium nitrate as an oxidizer and sucrose as the fuel. Typical ratio is 65% KNO3 and 35% Sucrose ( C12H22O11). 5 samples were tested with various additives: Sulphur @ 5%, AL powder @ 5% (2000mesh), Red Iron Oxide @ 2% ( Fe2O3), Iron Carbonate @ 2% ( FeCO3) plus the standard mix. Iron carbonate was made by mixing iron sulphate with sodium carbonate 1:1 ratio. FeSO4 + NaCO3 = NaSO4 + FeCO3. Iron carbonate will oxidize in the presence of air so contact is kept to a min. Grains: 22mm PVC pipe + paper ablative shield 1mm thick, 50mm long w/ 4mm id core. Propellant was mixed with distilled water then boiled off. propellant temp did not not exceed 149ÂșC.
