Day of Absence Douglas Turner Ward's "Day of Absence", set in 1965, is about how a small Southern community deals with the disappearance of its black population. The only ones left are sick and lying in hospital beds, refusing to get well. Without its black labor force, the town is paralyzed because of its dependence on this sector of the community. This comical yet eye-opening performance highlights how instrumental African- Americans were during this time period, and how little credit they received for all of the work they did.
