Dennis Potter's 'Pennies From Heaven' - 'Without That Certain Thing'
'Pennies From Heaven' by Dennis Potter. Episode 2: 'The Sweetest Thing'. Desperate to break free from living off his wife's nest egg, sheet music salesman Arthur (Bob Hoskins) pays a visit to his Bank Manager (Peter Cellier) to ask for a loan. Frustrated at his refusal to consider the request, Arthur launches into a tirade against the bank manager and is finally shown the door. To Arthur the tunes, charms and ecstasy of the songs are what life should be about. His only recourse is to plead for the cash through one of his songs. After all what's life without that certain thing? The studio set is suddenly bathed in strong lighting to signal the start of the number as Hoskins comes under the spotlight and breaks into dubbed song. As Hoskins and Cellier syncopate their dance moves to the lyrics of Roy Fox's soft, sweet relaxed music, the set transforms into a theatrical stage complete with footlights during a haunting instrumental break. Music: 'Without That Certain Thing'. Roy Fox & His Orchestra (Vocal: Peggy Dell). Dennis Potter's award-winning 'Pennies From Heaven' (BBC 1978). Directed by Piers Haggard, produced by long-time Potter collaborator Kenith Trodd, with choreography and design by Tudor Davies and Tim Harvey. One of the finest pieces of television the BBC has ever produced.
