The Long Good Friday (1979) is a violent crime thriller directed by John Mackenzie (known as "Frenzy Mackenzie") from a screenplay by Barrie Keeffe. Bob Hoskins stars as the brutal gangland boss Harold Shand - an old fashioned 1960's-style London gangster who in the late 1970s is aspiring to become a legitimate businessman. After returning to London from trip to America, he discovers that a rival gang seems to be destroying his empire, and realises his henchmen are being ruthlessly picked off. Harold attempts to trace the identity of his mens killers, but finds no reasoning behind the attacks on his organisation. The pressure on Harold is increased when his American visitors are subjected to a bomb attack Charlie (Eddie Constantine) informs Harold's girlfriend, Victoria (Helen Mirren), that he has 24 hours to find the culprits or the Americans will pull out of the deal. Owing something to American gangster movies of the 1940s, and rather more to "Get Carter" and TV crime shows, John Mackenzie's film remains both an explosively violent thriller and a sharp evocation of the enterprise culture of the time (Shand's dream is to build a new city in London's Docklands with Mafia money). Helen Mirren offers seductive support, while Pierce Brosnan (James Bond) appears as an anonymous hitman.
