Dennis Potter's 'Pennies From Heaven' - 'Cheek To Cheek'
'Pennies From Heaven' by Dennis Potter. Episode 1: Down Sunnyside Lane'. Commercial traveller Arthur (Bob Hoskins) has met - barely met - shy schoolteacher Eileen (Cheryl Campbell), the girl of his dreams. Driving home he imagines her dancing with him on a paradise floor and making him heavenly promises. Shot on location in the Oxfordshire countryside on 16mm film, the scene dissolves into the subtle textures of the studio set as Irving Berlin's classic number is given the 'Fred and Ginger' treatment and Hoskins and Campbell's dancing comes under the spotlight in a tribute to the silver screen. "Oh Arthur, I love you," coos Campbell. "Don't talk, don't break the spell," hams up Hoskins. Refreshing in keeping with the musical style of the series, Berlin's number is heard in an original version by a British dance band and singer of the time. Music: 'Cheek To Cheek'. Lew Stone And His Band. (Vocal: Sam Browne). Recorded 1935. Dennis Potter's award-winning 'Pennies From Heaven' (BBC 1978). Directed by Piers Haggard, produced by long-time Potter collaborator Kenith Trodd, with choreography and design by Tudor Davies and Tim Harvey. One of the finest pieces of television the BBC has ever produced.
