Dennis Potter's 'Pennies From Heaven' - 'Pick Yourself Up'
'Pennies From Heaven' by Dennis Potter. Episode 6: 'Says My Heart'. The lovers are hiding in a barn in a lonely old farmhouse. Arthur (Bob Hoskins) is on the run from police. Eileen has gone out looking for food leaving Arthur alone and feeling dejected. Time to pick yourself up. The classic song and dance number from the heyday of the silver screen and Broadway musicals, with Jerome Kern's music and Dorothy Fields lyrics, was filmed on location using the subtle texture of 16mm film. A tribute to Fred Astaire and the magical way his dancing with stage props could bring an inanimate object to life. Producers faced a double challenge. How to edit the scene on the beat and make the best of Hoskins dancing skills! The strawman or woman as it turns out isn't credited. Music: 'Pick Yourself Up', Lew Stone & His Orchestra. (Vocal: Bert Yarlett). Dennis Potter's award-winning 'Pennies From Heaven' (BBC 1978). Directed by Piers Haggard, produced by long-time Potter collaborator Kenith Trodd, with choreography and design by Tudor Davies and Tim Harvey. One of the finest pieces of television the BBC has ever produced.
