Dennis Potter's 'Pennies From Heaven' - 'Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart'
'Pennies From Heaven' by Dennis Potter. Episode 1: 'Down Sunny Side Lane'. Arthur (Bob Hoskins) is in Gloucester to sell his sheet music, pop songs and dreams - and sing them in a dance of ironic passion as he propositions the unreluctant Marjorie (Rosemary Martin) with a chorus of leering yokels, Jumbo (Robert Putt) and Will (Keith Marsh). Hoskins and the cast ham it up in a studio number which captures the dance movements of the 1930s. The whole scene, set in a traditional English pub of the period, is choreographed in the tight confines of a studio set of about eight feet square. Hoskins' cheeky takes to camera, comic actress Martin's man-eating mutton dressed as lamb and Putt and Marsh's period dance moves take on a cartoon feel as every dance cliché in the book is thrown into this tongue in cheek lip-synched rendition of Jimmie Hanley's classic number. Music: 'Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart'. Lew Stone and His Band (Vocal: Joe Crossman, Alfie Noakes, Don Barrigo, Jock Jacobsen). Recorded 1935. Dennis Potter's 'Pennies From Heaven' (BBC 1978). Directed by Piers Haggard, produced by long-time Potter collaborator Kenith Trodd, with choreography and design by Tudor Davies and Tim Harvey. One of the finest pieces of television the BBC has ever produced.
